چکیده

Chandra and XMM−Newton observations of the Cartwheel galaxy show∼ 17 bright X-ray sources ( > ∼ 5× 10 38 erg s), all within the gas-rich outer ring. We explore the hypothesis that these X-ray sources are powered by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) accreting gas or undergoing mass transfer from a stellar companion. To this purpose, we run N -body/SPH simulations of the galaxy interaction which might have led to the formation of Cartwheel, tracking the dynamical evolution of two different IMBH populations: halo and disc IMBHs. Halo IMBHs cannot account for the observed X-ray sources, as only a few of them cross the outer ring. Instead, more than half of the disc IMBHs are pulled in the outer ring as a consequence of the galaxy collision. However, also in the case of disc IMBHs, accretion from surrounding gas clouds cannot account for the high luminosities of the observed sources. Finally, more than 500 disc IMBHs are required to produce < ∼ 15 X-ray sources via mass transfer from very young stellar companions. Such number of IMBHs is very large and implies extreme assumptions. Thus, the hypothesis that all the observed X-ray sources in Cartwheel are associated with IMBHs is hardly consistent with our simulations, even if it is still possible that IMBHs account for the few ( < ∼ 1 − 5) brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs).

Ultraluminous X–ray Sources and Star Formation

Chandra observations of the Cartwheel galaxy reveal a population of ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULXs) with lifetimes <∼ 10 7 yr associated with a spreading wave of star formation which began some 3 × 10 yr ago. A population of high–mass X–ray binaries provides a simple model: donor stars of initial masses M2 >∼ 15M⊙ transfer mass on their thermal timescales to black holes of masses M1 >∼ 10M⊙....

Radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.

The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...

Variability of ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel Ring

The Cartwheel is one of the most outstanding examples of a dynamically perturbed galaxy where star formation is occurring inside the ring–like structure. In previous studies with Chandra, we detected 16 Ultra Luminous X-ray sources lying along the southern portion of the ring. Their Luminosity Function is consistent with them being in the high luminosity tail of the High Mass X-ray Binaries dis...

A Comparison of Intermediate-mass Black Hole Candidate Ultraluminous X-ray Sources and Stellar-mass Black Holes

Cool thermal emission components have recently been revealed in the X-ray spectra of a small number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with ergs s 1 in nearby galaxies. These components can be well 40 L ≥ 10 X fitted with accretion disk models, with temperatures approximately 5–10 times lower than disk temperatures measured in stellar-mass Galactic black holes when observed in their brightes...

Nonnuclear Hyper/Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources in the Starbursting Cartwheel Ring Galaxy

We report the Chandra/ACIS-S detection of more than 20 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L0.5−10keV > ∼3 × 10 ergs s) in the Cartwheel collisional ring galaxy system, of which over a dozen are located in the outer active star-forming ring. A remarkable hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX, L0.5−10keV > ∼10 ergs s assuming isotropic radiation), which dominates the X-ray emission from the Cartwheel r...
